A profound change has occurred in the business world over the last 15 years. Knowledge - knowledge of operations, knowledge that needs to be shared with customers and partners - has become an part of many corporations' business strategies. This is because the products and services offered are no longer enough to differentiate one company from another. Today, great corporate performance can be driven by how well a company knows its operations, how well it keeps its partners informed and the depth with which it understands its customers.
Almost all companies now have the raw data to support their business knowledge strategy. New, powerful operational systems, customer service systems and even Web 'click-stream' data collection systems provide vast stores of data for companies, regardless of size. But even with these large amounts of data, some companies are still held back from maximizing their potential. This is because the techniques used to explore and examine the data have not kept pace with the growth in volume of data. Companies are still using only a small percentage of what is available.
What is necessary to maximize the potential is a Business Intelligence capability. A Business Intelligence capability is a set of analytically oriented tools and practices that support a knowledge discovery process. These tools can take advantage of large volumes of data and provide us with knowledge that is fact-based, verifiable and actionable. They can assess, prioritize, distribute and even act upon information as never before. In the drive to act faster and smarted, companies can use Business Intelligence to achieve performance that was not possible in the past.

Like a business strategy, a DW/BI strategy is a guide that is used for project planning, design and development efforts. The strategy document should contain many components. Some of the components should be:
- The vision and objectives of the DW/BI environment;
- Policies regarding data ownership, sources and quality levels;
- Technical and data architecture guidelines; and a
- Risk assessment.
The uniques perspective that Cardinal Directions brings to its strategy engagements is a purposeful alignment of the DW/BI strategy with the overarching business strategy. Too often we have seen companies focus on the technology only to have projects fails because they did not appropriately support the business. To be successful we work with our clients to understand the strategic model first and then, like a process model, add details for the policies, architectures, risks and other DW/BI components.

- Data Warehouse Strategy for an international toy retailer
- Data Warehouse & Reporting Strategy for a textile manufacturer
- Current Capabilities Assessment for a clinical research organization
